The 2004 Premio del Golfo –
La Spezia European Biennale of the Visual Arts opens the doors
of the new Modern and Contemporary Art Center in La Spezia
to the public this year.
In 1933, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti launched the idea, together
with that of the Premio del Golfo, of creating a museum of
contemporary art in La Spezia. After a various succession
of events, the Premio was reinstated in 2000 thanks to the
determination of the City of La Spezia administration and
the Spezia Society for the Visual Arts. In the wake of the
successful 2002 edition, it has now opened again at CAMeC,
on a regular alternating-year basis, thereby completely fulfilling
Marinetti’s dream.
The 2004 Premio del Golfo exhibition, Constant Differences,
curated by Bruno Corà, director of CAMeC, without intending
to constitute any particular tendency, in its self-explanatory
title already expresses an obvious interest in highlighting
the dissonant artistic issues of our current historical-cultural
times.
Dedicated to painting and intended to enlarge the public collections
already residing at the new Modern and Contemporary Art Center,
this year’s Premio features the participation of young
artists recognized by scientific scholars in charge of museums
in twelve European countries (Slovenia, Belgium, Portugal,
France, Switzerland, Greece, Great Britain, Austria, Germany,
Holland, Denmark, Italy) and of one in the Mediterranean basin,
Turkey.
In fact, among the new features of the Premio is the perception
of the particular role that a city like La Spezia can play
in the discussion of art in the Mediterranean basin, where
so many cultural factors and relevant transformational elements
call for attention to the growth of new generations from other
countries possessing new social and cultural realities often
in contrast with the more consolidated contemporary art experiences
of strictly European countries.
A Jury composed of renowned experts and personalities in the
contemporary art world, Bruno Corà, Jannis Kounellis,
Urs Raussmüller, Marco Vallora, Gianfranco Benedetti,
Luciano Fabro, assigned the 2004 Premio del Golfo. |
