The Jury of the 2004 Premio del Golfo met at the
La Spezia Center of Modern and Contemporary Art at 4 p.m. on November
24th. The Jury members present were: Gianfranco Benedetti, Bruno
Corà, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Urs Raussmüller.
Marco Vallora was unable to attend and was excused.
After having observed the works on exhibition, each marked by a
number and no other distinctive element, and after having read the
Conditions for participating and the relative Rules, each Jury member
made a personal selection and compiled an initial short list of
his five preferences. Once all the preferences had been expressed,
the winner of the Premio became clear immediately: nominated by
a majority (four Jury members out of five), it was Vassilis Kalantzis.
A second vote was held of the already short listed candidates to
determine the second prize. The second prize, expressed by a majority
(three Jury members out of five) was awarded to the work of the
painter, Monique De Ridder.
The Jury expressed its intent to assign the highest award to Vassilis
Kalantzis’ work, consisting of diptychs of photographs, with
the following consideration, in which “through the use of
its analogical ciphering, natural forms capable of provoking references
to reality and to objective, even symbolic, situations are visualized.”
The Jury concluded its work at 6 p.m. and the meeting was adjourned.
